Experiment of writing a story longhand from start to finish.

Rules

1 Page a Week

Going to start off small. Every week, must come back and add at least 1 page to the story/draft/outline. (I can do more if I wish, but the minimum is 1.) Doesn’t have to be chronological. Just has to be one page a week.

1 Lesson a Week

1 lesson learned from the session. Ways to organize. What I should’ve done instead (and can do going forward).

Stop Once Story is Complete

When you’ve told the story from start to finish and there are no holes left to plug, this experiment is ready to end.

Everything Else is Fair Game

Why?

  1. To keep myself (hopefully) accountable
  2. Seems to be the easiest (though inefficient) way to make progress (no distractions).
  3. There doesn’t seem to be much material out there and how writers who write longhand organize their writing if they’re prone to write out of order and in a notebook (not a binder where the pages can be easily rearranged). I wanted to see if I can figure out a system.

Without further adieu, my pages for the week:

Lesson #1 – Set Rules. Start.

Sounds easy enough, but there might be a lot of hesitation if you’re a perfectionist. I was worried about this being an absolutely inefficient use of my time. Worried about things being out of order and it taking longer down the line to put the pieces into place later.

But since this is an experiment, it’s not forever commitment. It’s just trying something new to see if it’ll work. It’s about actually getting the story done, even if it’s through inefficient means. If the efficient way isn’t getting the job done, gotta be willing to try a different route.
